Digital Tides

Michelle Higa Fox’s Strandlines is an art installation that replicates Rhode Island’s tide patterns. The installation uses light projections that mimic the ebb and flow of local tides in Rhode Island. No two projections are the same and the digital tides flow onto an actual sand bed. I really like this installation because not only does it replicate nature in an interesting way, it also creates an aurora borealis effect above the digital tide. This piece replicates nature through a digital platform which displays the beauty of naturally occurring tidal patterns while enhancing (maybe even improving) how tidal patterns are viewed by a spectator. This installation almost makes you prefer the artificial waves in comparison to organic ones which puts the viewer in an interesting position. I think this piece is striking and highlights technology’s influence on how we perceive the natural world.
