England-based artist Camila Carlow has created a photography collection using flowers and natural materials to replicate human organs. Carlow creates these images to call attention to nature’s indifference towards human presence and the way nature continues to grow regardless of human interaction. The photographs also relate to the body’s ability to sustain itself without a person’s consent and the natural mechanics behind human organs. I think this collection ties into the idea of humans not being the center of a given ecology and the notion of humans being more similar to nature rather than above or superior to it. Carlow’s depiction of the human brain and lungs are really beautiful and they create a striking similarity with an actual picture of the brain or lungs. I like the idea of portraying internal organs (which are usually viewed as disgusting when seen outside of the body) as floral shapes because it links nature with parts of humans that aren’t seen on a daily basis. I think the fact that Carlow uses predominately internal organs speaks to her main point of how nature should be a part of a person’s life, so much so that it’s unseen and internalized.
