Lorenzo Nanni makes embroidered pieces of art that could pass for microscope slides. Inspired by anatomy and nature, his textile works resemble bacteria, cells, blood, plus flora and fauna. For cohesion with his subject matter, Nanni uses primarily natural materials like silk, wool, fibers, bone, wood, quartz and jade. Of his relationship with these materials, Nanni says, “Knowledge of organic matter allows me to work without losing their genetic characteristics.”

His website is definitely worth a perusal. His depictions of arteries and capillaries are grotesquely realistic. The plant/floral portrayals are similarly intricate and lifelike, revealing Nanni’s careful study of his works’ inspiration.
