Fallen Fruit

Founded by David Burns and Austin Young, Fallen Fruit began in Los Angeles as an art collaboration centered on concepts of private and public space. The expanded team now works on installations and public art events in various cities globally. Communal jam-making, neighborhood fruit tours and fruit-laden photography are just a few of the projects Fallen Fruit has conceived.

Some of Fallen Fruit’s projects contradict each other. Endeavors like “Del Aire Public Fruit Park,” which involved the planting of fruit trees in a public space, are praise-worthy and conservationist. But other projects seem unnecessarily wasteful. In “Public Fruit Meditation,” participants were photographed smashing whole watermelons with a sledgehammer. Similarly, “TED Active” featured a banana eating contest where contestants raced to devour as many bananas as they could stomach. The overall mission of Fallen Fruit appears more concerned with uniting the public through an arbitrary object rather than protecting the subject matter they decided on.
