Corpse Couture

O’Connor, Kim. “Corpse Couture: Clothes for Going Out in Style.” Wired Oct. 2013: 50. Print.

Australian fashion designer, Pia Interlandi, constructs her clothes with one unusual inspiration in mind: death. After realizing that modern day burial clothes like suits and dresses are intended to last instead of decompose, she set to designing ideal degradable garments. Using blends of hemp and organic cotton, she creates beautiful yet eco-friendly body shrouds decorated with lace and bound with silk.  The eerie outfits act as a temporary encasing that will eventually break down, allowing the earth access to the body’s nutrients, water and protein.

Her clothing line, Garments for the Grave, offers the world an environmentally-friendly approach to burial. However, questions about access are left unanswered as of now. Her online shop is set to be coming soon, but currently the price of her garments is unclear. If they are affordable enough for most to purchase, this is potentially a fantastic alternative to traditional practices.
