Project Runway likely isn’t the first thought that comes to mind when thinking of the intersection between the environment and technology. But the invention of Brooklyn designer, Sean Kelly, changed that in a recent episode. Faced with the challenge of a raining runway, Kelly designed a blank dress that would interact with moisture. Sewing pockets of water-activated dye within white fabric, Kelly produced a dress that completely transformed in the face of environmental factors. While most contestants made waterproof garments, he introduced an idea of environmentally interactive fashion.

I’m in awe of this and the potential inventions that could come from following this train of thought. This dress is obviously limited in the fact that it relies on one-time use, but Kelly only had two days to handle the project. With some more tweaking, I think this has many possibilities. It makes a visual statement about how our environment enriches human life.
